Agricultural Risk Assessment and Management for Food Security in Developing Countries

A resource for an inter-agency e-learning course
Abstract:

This paper seeks to increase stakeholders’ understanding of agricultural risks, management tools and implementation processes. In particular, it discusses the vast array of tools potentially applicable for agricultural risk management with a focus on the pros and cons and the suitability in given specific risk situations. Case studies are also illustrated for deeper insights into four different types of risk management: 1) On-farm and community-level risk management tools; 2) Finance-related risk management tools; 3) Market-based risk management tools; and 4) Government supported risk management tools.
